Indians pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez has been suspended five games by MLB for intentionally throwing at Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki.
Jimenez is scheduled to serve his suspension during the first week of the season unless he appeals the decision.
Although he maintains that he didn’t hit Tulowitzki on purpose this quote from him surely doesn’t help his case, “He was calling me names,” Jimenez said. “I already said I didn’t want to hit him. I had five walks. It’s not the first time somebody (was) hit.”
All we can say is that he is lucky that this isn’t the NFL or Roger Goodell might have banned him for the season.

Too much thumb-wrestling
It sounds like things just got a whole lot worse for Andrew Bailey.
The man tabbed to replace Jonathan Papelbon at the back of Boston’s bullpen has been suffering through thumb pain for close to two weeks, and is now facing the possibility of surgery.
Mark Melancon, and Alfredo Aceves have already been mentioned as replacements, but it wouldn’t surprise us if Boston pulls the plug on Daniel Bard’s transition to starter, and slots him in as the 9th-inning man.
Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto is on the verge of signing the largest contract in franchise history.
The extension is rumored to be in the $200 million dollar range.
With Matt Cain also re-upping earlier, it doesn’t seem teams are saving much money locking up their young stars early. Still, the respective fan-bases have to be thrilled to see their homegrown talent signing up long-term.
We’ll keep you updated on the final numbers.
Update: USA Today is reporting the deal is 10 yrs and 225 million. Wow.

I smell money.
It looks like Matt Cain isn’t going anywhere this offseason.
San Fran locked up the big righty for another five (potentially six) years for $112.5 million. This deal should work out slightly better than Barry Zito’s. With a rotation anchored by Cain, Lincecum, and young gun, Madison Bumgarner, things are looking pretty nice by the Bay.

"I take issue with your pitch location, sir!"
Tempers flared in the Rockies/Indians game yesterday after Ubaldo Jimenez beaned Troy Tulowitzki. It looked pretty intentional to us, and clearly the Rocks seem to agree.
It sounds like Ubaldo was quite the malcontent before being shipped out of Denver last season. While you’d expect some negative comments following an event like this, the article even contains criticism from the perennially pleasant Jason Giambi. That doesn’t say much for Jimenez as a teammate.
